For Clients.
Why see a psychologist for an assessment?
You might want to seek a psychological assessment to better understand your strengths, challenges, and how your brain works. This can be helpful if you have been having trouble with things like staying focused, staying organised, following instructions, reading, writing, or math. It can also help if you find it hard to manage emotions, connect with others socially, or cope with sensory experiences.
The assessment can provide answers and help create a plan with your family, teachers, employers, or your support team (e.g., speech therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, or support workers) to support you in your everyday life. It may also give you access to funding for services and offer a clearer understanding of your neurotype, helping you build on your strengths and work on areas where you need more support.
Appointment overview and next steps
Initial appointment

- Elaboration of information provided in your intake form
- Confirmation of the assessment plan and discussion of next steps
- Copies of any previous reports (e.g., from speech therapy, psychology, occupational therapy, or specialists)
- Copies of school reports
- Contact details for your child’s school teacher (if primary school aged)
- A support person, if you feel it would help make you more comfortable
Follow-up appointments
The structure of your follow-up appointments will vary depending on the type of assessment you have requested.
- Cognitive, academic, memory, and executive functioning assessments: These sessions involve 1.5-2 hours of direct assessment using a combination of iPads and paper-based response forms. Breaks are provided as needed for movement, food, restroom use, and relaxation.
- Autism assessment (14 to 18 years): This is a 2-hour, question-based assessment that explores interests, sensory preferences, emotions, social relationships, language, communication style, and adaptive functioning needs. It is typically completed with a parent, partner, or someone who knows you well.
- Autism assessment (5 years and under): A one-hour, play-based assessment with the child. For children under 6, parents are generally asked to be present, though parents are welcome to stay for children of any age to increase their comfort.
- Developmental assessment: A semi-structured play session is completed with the child to assess motor skills, early learning, language, communication style, social interaction, executive functioning, attention, and behaviour regulation.
- Daycare or school observation (primary school age and younger): This is a 1.5-hour observation in the daycare centre or school setting. This goal is to observe the child’s motor skills, language, communication style, social interaction, executive functioning, attention, and behaviour regulation in their natural environment. The child should not be aware that they are being observed. If an observation is not possible, this information may be supplemented through clinical interviews with the educator or teachers who know the child well.
- Feedback appointment: The feedback appointment is 30 minutes long and includes a discussion of the testing results, any diagnoses made, and an overview of strengths, difficulties, and recommendations. There will be time for questions and to discuss follow-up resources, including referrals and resources for further exploration of neurotype such as books or online materials.
- Water bottle (if desired)
- Snacks (if desired)
- Comfort items (e.g., fidgets, weighted lap blanket)
- Glasses (if applicable)
- Hearing aids (if applicable)
